I recently sold something on Craigslist (CL). CL is great. What’s not so great is the scammers who try to take advantage of people through CL. There are fake ad, people using counterfeit money orders, etc. What struck me was a new scam that appears legit and innocent.
If you need to list a phone and it is worth it, you may want to get a prepaid to keep from giving out your phone number. That’s just a tip. The scam is that you’ll get texts with requests to send them an email and they give you an email address.
If you’ve used CL, they have a way to send emails that does not reveal your information. What these scammers are doing is trying to get your email address. Most likely, they are looking to sell legit email addresses to other spammers/scammers.
CL is great. You just have to be careful. Requesting an email sounds like it is innocent enough, but it should make you wonder why they are getting around the security measures in place to protect you.
