There is a scam that has been around for years known as ATM skimming. The scammers put a card reader over the ATM’s card reader and place a camera to pick up your PIN being entered. When you insert your card, it is scanned and stored in the scammer’s skimmer. The camera is angled to watch you enter your PIN.
To help reduce the risk,
- Check the ATM for a loose reader. If it is legitimate, the ATM’s reader is built in and will not be loose.
- Cover the PIN pad with one hand when entering your PIN. Not high tech, but they won’t get your number.
- Use indoor ATMs when in doubt. Indoor ATMs are less likely to be tampered with.
- If you see odd behavior on your account statement, contact the bank immediately!
